From Scratch is a Netflix limited series produced by Hello Sunshine, based on Tembi Locke’s bestselling memoir. Premiering on the Netflix Global Top 10, From Scratch was nominated for 5 NAACP Image Awards, and won the Los Angeles Film Italy Award. Â
The series tells the epic, 14-year love story of Amy Wheeler (Zoe Saldaña), an American art student studying in Italy, and Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), a Sicilian chef, whose chance encounter on the streets of Florence sparks a life-changing connection. As their fling grows into a powerful love, they are forced navigate cultural divides, family resistance, and an unforeseen illness that reshapes their lives.  From Scratch is a deeply moving exploration of love, loss and resilience; it celebrates the beauty of human connection and promises to resonate with anyone who has ever experienced fierce love and profound loss. ADAPTATION: FROM PAGE TO SCREENÂ
This story sits at the interaction of real life and fiction. Yes, it was/is my lived experience, but From Scratch, the TV limited series, is inspired by a lifetime of stories that never made it into the book. Working with my sister, Attica Locke, and a team of incredible writers made the prospect of adapting From Scratch even more exciting. Attica and I bring to the development and writing process a shorthand, a shared creative sensibility, and an intimate knowledge of these characters. As sisters and storytellers with more than four decades of combined Hollywood experience, both in front of and behind the camera, we knew things would have to change from the book to the screen. The narrative structure would shift and we have an open willingness to fictionalize.Â
Together, we have created a story with the heart, human truths, and cinematic scope of the book. It was always our hope that From Scratch, the series, would be an expanded story that leaves readers with deeper insights into the story and leaves viewers longing to read the book.
With our team of brilliant creative collaborators and visionaries, we are honored to bring forth a timeless story of love, loss, family, and what it means to engage life artfully even in the face of great unknowns. For me, it was and will always be a labor of love and light.
